Aperitivo Like a Local
The concept of aperitivo goes beyond just the fun drinks and tasty snacks; it is a way of life in Italy. Many Italians see it as an essential chance to wind down from the day's activities and enjoy a relaxed, social atmosphere before the evening meal. Aperitivo time is all about enjoying the company of others while savoring quality food and drinks. It’s an especially inclusive time where you can meet up with colleagues after work or friends, and even their children!
The tradition of pre-dinner drinks and snacks is meant to stimulate the appetite before the main meal but has become an important part of Italian culture, and has now become a cherished ritual for visitors as well. Aperitivo can be just a spritz accompanied by a few olives and nuts or it can be a glass of wine with mixed crostini and a board full of meat and cheese, it all depends on your mood and preference! In Florence aperitivo can also spill over and turn into dinner which we call “apericena”. If the wine is flowing, the snacks keep appearing and you’re enjoying yourself why not?
Here are a few of my favorite spots for aperitivo in Florence (where the locals actually go!)
Ideal location for a snack or if you're looking for a quick lunch spot in Florence that offers a truly regional experience with sandwiches prepared with the famous Florentine Schiacciata (traditonal tuscan bread). This delightful eatery not only boasts a wide range of wines by the glass, perfect for pairing with your meats and cheeses, but also provides a casual and friendly atmosphere with attentive service. The best part is that the food here is reasonably priced, without evecompromising on quality. With three convenient locations scattered around Florence, you can easily indulge in the delicious flavours of the region and savor the essence of Tuscany in every bite. My favorite location is in my neighborhood on Via Gioberti. Aperitivo time gets busy so if you want a seat outside make sure to get there early (6ish)!
In the heart of a bustling district filled with fancy designer shops, you'll discover the perfect little classy bar that exudes sophistication and charm. This location offers a delightful combination that has become a favorite of mine. Picture yourself seated in the elegant bar, indulging in a glass of elegant Franciacorta (bubbles) accompanied by a mini sandwich filled with rich truffle and foie gras, a true culinary masterpiece. This attractive spot perfectly marries luxury and taste, making it an absolute must-visit for those seeking an elevated gastronomic experience.
Located in a cool neighbourhood just outside the city centre, this charming spot is a hidden gem. A nice selection of wines alongside a tempting list of fun cocktails, there are plenty of options to enjoy for aperitivo with friends. The inviting interior creates a cosy ambiance, while the outside seating area offers the perfect spot to soak up the local atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a light bite during aperitivo or a heartier meal, their menu offers a good selection of snacks to nibble on, larger dishes such as beef tartare and even big salads! Just a 20 minute walk from the historic centre and you will arrive in a tourist free zone surrounded by locals.
Here you'll find a super small wine bar that exudes a casual and fun atmosphere. Despite its petite size, this little gem boasts a nice selection of quality wines served by the glass and an array of delectable snacks, making it an ideal spot for aperitivo or even a light dinner. Whether you're seeking a relaxing evening with friends or a cozy date night, this wine bar promises an unforgettable experience that embodies the essence of a perfect casual wine night out.
Not your average Tuscan gastronomia! Beyond its delectable pre-made dishes, this hidden gem boasts a remarkable wine selection that will excite even the most seasoned wine lover, including a fantastic Champagne selection. Elevating the pre-dinner experience, a special aperitivo plate is available with an enticing assortment of mixed snacks that perfectly complement the wines by the glass. For those seeking heartier options, their gastronomia menu presents a wide array of dishes, rich in flavours and showcasing the best of local ingredients. Whether you're a devoted foodie or a wine enthusiast, you will enjoy this locally loved spot that offers exceptional wines and mouth-watering dishes in a lively location.
Located just outside the historic you can enjoy specialty crostini crafted with care, alongside a weekly changing menu of larger dishes that celebrate seasonal ingredients while savoring small production wines selected from regions across Italy. Paolino, the passionate owner, is always on hand to guide you in choosing the perfect wine that matches your taste and mood. Go here for an authentic Italian experience where great food, exceptional wine, and warm hospitality come together.
In this Southern Italian inspired neighborhood spot you will find a very special early evening seafood aperitivo. For just 12 euros, you can enjoy a perfectly paired glass of wine alongside a delicious selection of fried seafood or fresh mussels. The perfect start to your evening with quality, tradition, and unbeatable value. Who knows, you might even end up staying for dinner!
Georgia’s Pro Tips
Have plenty of patience in Italian wine bars and restaurants. Don't expect servers to rush or respond well to being rushed. Relax and embrace the more laid back pace, you're on holiday after all!
