September’s Vendemmia Magic

September is here! It’s definitely my favorite month—not just because it’s both mine and my son’s birthday month, but also because it marks the start of cooler weather here in Tuscany and, of course, harvest time (“vendemmia”).

If you’re a wine lover, this is truly the best time to visit. The vineyards come alive with energy as grapes are picked at peak ripeness, and the whole community comes together to celebrate a year’s hard work. You’ll get a real sense of how the industry functions—not just as a business, but as a way of life deeply rooted in tradition.

And if you’re like me, you might even enjoy getting your hands a little dirty. Wineries are always looking for extra help during harvest, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of the process. There’s nothing quite like working among the vines, then sitting down to a well-earned meal (and wine!) knowing you’ve played a small role in the creation of it. It makes that plate of pasta and that glass of Chianti taste even more satisfying.

The month also bursts with wine festivals celebrating the grape harvest, where villages come alive with parades, tastings, and local traditions. From historic town squares to rolling vineyards, it’s the perfect chance to sip new vintages, meet passionate winemakers, and experience Tuscany’s wine culture at its most vibrant.

With the mix of pleasant weather, fewer tourists, local festivities every weekend and the magic of the vendemmia, September offers wine lovers an experience that’s as authentic as it gets in Tuscany.

Here’s a short list of a few September Wine Festivals that are definitely worth checking out and easy to reach if you’re staying in Florence
